Skype for Business/Lync installs

    Hi Ndmoon,

This can be a frustrating issue since lync.exe, which is both standalone Lync and Skype for Business, can be installed in different locations and in different directories depending on the Office version (2010, 2013, 2016, and Office 365).

We don’t need to worry about the consumer version of Skype. This can be installed on computers without impacting our search. If you do need that information, you can do a search for the Skype application since it shows in Programs and Features in the Control Panel, appwiz.cpl, as well as the Applications table in PDQ Inventory. We also have a collection in Inventory’s Collection Library for consumerist Skype.

In order to find the information you want, you’ll need to create a custom scan profile (Preferences > Scan Profiles). The scanner you will want to Add is the Files scanner. Lync/Skype can be installed in several places, so you want to include as many patterns to capture all of those locations:

    %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\root\Office*\lync.exe
    %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\root\Office14\communicator.exe
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\root\Office*\lync.exe
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\root\Office14\communicator.exe
    %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office*\lync.exe
    %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office14\communicator.exe
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office*\lync.exe
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office14\communicator.exe

You can add an additional Files scanner to capture consumer Skype as well (the example below uses this):

Or alternately, you can use the Collection Library collection or filter using:

    Application| Name | Matches Expression | Skype(?!.*click)(?!.*web plugin)

    • Skype for Business still uses the lync.exe executable.
    • In Office 2010, communicator.exe was used instead of lync.exe.
    • You can be more aggressive in your scan profile, using \**\ instead of *, but keep in mind that using this can increase scan times significantly.

Once you have scanned your targets with the Files scanner you created above, you can then create your collection or report with the following filters:
