Best practices for Java updates

 What would be some best practices when doing java updates specifically time of day?  We have an application that is based on Java that most employees keep open all day long.  Then once it's time to go home they pack up their laptop and take it with them.   Not sure what everyone does to get the necessary Java updates deployed.
