Uninstall Microsoft OneNote

The Uninstall Office 365 package works great, but it doesn't remove the Microsoft OneNote packages. Could we get a package to uninstall OneNote or add that in with the 365 uninstall?

  • Hi BIll, I've created a ticket to look into this.

  • Hi Bill,

I'm looking at this and I can't find any entries in our lab for OneNote installed as a separate install in Control Panel / Programs. It appears to be a part of the bundle. I did find an appx entry on my laptop for OneNote. I searched and found the following command that might work for you. Could you please try this in a Powershell script or Poweshell step? Let us know your results.

    get-appxpackage *microsoft.office.onenote* | remove-appxpackage

  • I gave that a try and it did not make a difference.

  • appXpackage does not work, it doesn't seem to have an uninstall GUID, and appears to be some weird CtR thing, this is what is in the UninstallString:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe" scenario=install scenariosubtype=ARP sourcetype=None productstoremove=OneNoteFreeRetail.16_en-us_x-none culture=en-us version.16=16.0

That's on a fresh OOB machine with no updates.

  • I am having the same issue. Did you ever get this resolved?

  • Hugh Lancaster No, there's been no resolution which is a little irksome to be honest.

  • I created 4 packages to uninstall OneNote and it has been working like a charm. (I know I could compress it down to one Uninstall package...but I was lazy)

    OneNote - en-us

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe" scenario=install scenariosubtype=ARP sourcetype=None productstoremove=OneNoteFreeRetail.16_en-us_x-none culture=en-us version.16=16.0 DisplayLevel=False

    OneNote - es-es

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe" scenario=install scenariosubtype=ARP sourcetype=None productstoremove=OneNoteFreeRetail.16_es-es_x-none culture=es-es version.16=16.0 DisplayLevel=False

    OneNote - fr-fr

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe" scenario=install scenariosubtype=ARP sourcetype=None productstoremove=OneNoteFreeRetail.16_fr-fr_x-none culture=fr-fr version.16=16.0 DisplayLevel=False

    OneNote - pt-br

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\OfficeClickToRun.exe" scenario=install scenariosubtype=ARP sourcetype=None productstoremove=OneNoteFreeRetail.16_pt-br_x-none culture=pt-br version.16=16.0 DisplayLevel=False

  • Apologies William that you've been frustrated with the lack of response on this. We do have an official ticket in our backlog to look at this further, but with many competing priorities and Uninstall packages typically being a lower priority (An unwanted application is typically an annoyance, but not a productivity blocker), it's not our main focus at this time. In this case, some OneNote installations are baked into the OS and more difficult to remove than our traditional script we use, making it more difficult to provide a quick solution.

Thank you Bill for the good information on how to accomplish this! We will add this information to the ticket. Alternatively, our software allows you the ability to make custom packages and you could take the information BIll provided along with this guide and quickly build a custom package: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnF-QdX7aZw. This also might be helpful an an overall guide: https://www.pdq.com/blog/silently-uninstall-just-about-anything/
And finally, this might also be helpful as a preventative measure with your OS image to prevent new systems from having OneNote going forward: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/deployment-guide-onenote

Hope that helps! If not, please open a ticket with our Support group (support@pdq.com) and we'll do our best to help you.

  • Actually I think Bill Banks just solved it for me!  I'll incorporate that into my prep script! I'd love for my issue to go away, but I'm obligated to purchase LTSC for the foreseeable future instead of just rolling with 365. Of course my Google bill going up to $28/user/month *may* just cause us to migrate. *shudder*
