What's the purpose of the Version field?

With Version 2.3 of pdq deploy you added the version field to the package properties.

what is the purpose of this? I realise I can fill in the version of the program I'm installing but I can't see this reflected anywhere else in the program, not even on the package details pane. And if I update the install file, I then have to remember to go in and update that field. I know I can just ignore it but I was wondering what the thought was behind this and it's not actually mentioned in the program documentation, it just has a blank description. Will this be referenced in a future product version or only in the pro version?

Just something that sits on my mind when I update/create packages.

Thanks

  • That's a good question. The version field is used, at this point, primarily for the Package Library packages that have been built in PDQ Deploy 2.3 or later. We use it to determine the latest version of a package. In Deploy 3.0 we will take the version value and append it to the display name of the package. This way you can see, at a glance, what the version is.
