How to Deploy Visio 2007

I already have a setup.exe built but the install just hangs. When I run just the setup.exe I don't have to do anything, it is all automated.

  • Hi Eric, when you say it's all automated, are you talking about a customized exe that doesn't require any parameters? Usually exe's require silent parameters, etc. If you double click on the exe (outside of PDQ) does it fully install without any GUI or any user interaction? Are you using a response file by chance?

  • Correct. All that is needed is to run the setup.exe and the installation starts with no user interaction needed. All that shows is the Office installation progress. I did not build the exe so I am not sure if it is using a response file.

  • Will you please take a screen shot of your package window and post it here? I just want to check a few things out. A hung installation on an EXE is almost always due to user interaction expected but not received. You mention a status bar will display when doing this manually. That sometimes means that when it's completed a modal window will pop up saying installation complete with the requirement to click OK. Since that window will not be displayed when pushing via PDQ (it installs in the background) it would never be acknowledged. Please post the screenshot and I'll do a quick check.

  • Here is what shows up. It also does a reboot after installation with no user interaction needed.

  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for the screenshot. On the step that runs the silent install go to the Options tab and select Run As Deploy User (Interactive). (The Options and Conditions tabs are available in Pro and Enterprise modes)

The screenshot you sent shows that the installation still needs access to the Desktop. A typical silent install doesn't display any UI. Since this one does display something (the status window) then the installation needs to executed with an interactive logon.
