Hardware Recommendations for 3000 computers

We currently have about 3000 computers in our inventory and recently started using Auto Deployment Packages with heartbeat schedules to keep shockwave and flash up to date on all of our computers.

This works pretty well but the performance can get pretty bad when there are large numbers of running deployments and scanning computers. The CPU is almost always over 50% and oftentimes pegged at 100%

We currently run the software on a virtual machine with 8 GB RAM and 2 cores of a Xeon X5690.

We would like to move to dedicated hardware for this machine. What would you recommend?

We have a desktop with a i7 4770 and 8 GB of RAM and an 840 Evo ssd. Would that be sufficient?

  • Hi Michael,

I know this comes late, but I wanted to offer this in case you are still experiencing hardware issues, have yet to migrate, or need to provision other resources for your VM (memory and vCPU mostly).

    Recommended hardware/software

    Software:

    • 64-bit Windows 7, 8.1, Server 2008 R2 or Server 2012 R2

    Hardware:

    • CPU: That CPU should be fine, though the K model would be better. You could go i7 6700K or i7 4790K for about the same price with slightly better benchmarked speeds.
    • Memory: 16GB is recommended for 1000+ machines and you could start there, but with memory prices the way they are, 32GB for under $150 is a good investment.
    • Storage: That SSD is great.
