Why would a software deployment not return an error code?

I created a package to install a piece of software using 5.1.0.0 Enterprise on my own computer as a test and while the software installed successfully, apparently no exit code was generated so PDQ kept spinning.

Using the same package, without alterations, on another computer resulted in a completed install successfully and an exit code was generated just fine.

What would cause that?
