is there a way to run a report for installed windows updates/patches for a particular month?

    Sure, there is a way.

Create a copy of "Security hotfixes report", then modify it by adding a value filter:

Hotfix > Installed on > Between > value "Relative date" set it to 30 days ago.

When you run the report on the first day of the month, you get your result.

Note: I am not attaching a ready made filter on purpose. Its the easy way, but I want you to learn how to use it by your self so next time when someone asks, you can be the one answering the question. ;-)

the default security hotfix report only shows hotfixes that are in the "security category" so I removed that because I want to see all updates that get installed in the last 30 days. I then added that "installed on" filter and tested it. everything works perfectly.

P.S> just want to confirm, the hotfix query does show all the patches/updates/service packs under the "see installed updates" section in windows add/remove programs correct? just want to make sure I did this right.

    thanks for your help.
