Installing .NET on Windows 2012 Server from PDQ Inventory

On a new Windows Server 2012 Datacentre x64 install PDQ Inventory is trying to install .NET when the system already has .net 4.5 features installed but the .net 3.5 features are not installed by default.

I will install the .net 3.5 features for the Server Manager and see how I go.

  • Hi Rob,

Sorry for the confusion. Installing .NET 3.5 from PDQ Inventory 1.x to Windows Server 2012 does not work. This will be fixed in the next release (2.0) of Inventory. In the mean time if you would do as you mentioned and install from Server Manager that should do the trick.

Please note that installing .NET 3.5 from PDQ Inventory to Windows 8 does work as expected. We were unable to get the fix into 1.1.5.

  • I have discovered that .Net 3.5 will NOT deploy automatically under Windows 8 in one specific circumstance...  If WSUS is in use!  The solution is to temporarily disable WSUS on the Win 8 client, install .Net 3.5, then reenable WSUS!

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU\UseWUServer

set to 0, reboot, install .Net 3.5, reset to 1, reboot.

Hope this helps someone else :)

  • Sorry, I meant to point out the very last item on that msdn page is the part that got me pointed in the right direction.
