ICMP required for inventory scan?

We have quite a few remote users (50+) who connect via an ipsec split tunnel.  ICMP is disabled through the tunnel so I know that heartbeat and online status will not be correct for these machines.

My question is: Is there a way to still inventory the machines, whether manually or scheduled, even though their online status cannot be determined?

I already have the Offline Policy set to Attempt scan, but it only returns an error that the target computer is offline.  The PDQ server has been made accessible via the tunnel with both read/write rights and PDQ Inventory reflects the correct IP address obtained via DNS.

Please let me know if more information is needed.

  • Hi,

Run the Remote Repair utility against one of these systems. Highlight a computer in Inventory and the run Open Remote Repair from the Help menu. When the window opens up click the analyze button. What is the result of the tests?

BTW, props for having the Offline Scanner set to Attempt Scan. The Do Not Attempt does run a ping first and the Attempt doesn't. Since the Attempt doesn't use ICMP it relies on SMB and DNS. You've verified the DNS so now we need to verify the SMB connectivity (which is what remote repair will do).

  • Hey Shane,

Just wanted to let you know that we were able to resolve the issue with the help of the Remote Repair tool.  I was able to run the tool on the PDQ server pointing to the VPN user, which resulted in errors.  Running it from the remote machine to the PDQ server on the other hand worked without issues.  That helped us narrow it down to the permissions on the tunnel itself.

Thank you for your time and help regarding this issue.  I'll try to read up on the tools available through PDQ Inventory, having just installed it last Friday with the free trial I was not aware of the Remote Repair tool.

Thanks for yet another great product!
