How to group/split collections automatically.

I'm trying to create a subcollection, splitting/grouping the computers by the version of Chrome they're running.  Right now I have to create a bunch of sub-collections, and add up the totals to see if I missed any.

Is there a better way?  It would be nice if it could group automatically for me in the collection filter setup.  Or should I do it some other way?

Thanks,

Robert Peters.

  • Hi Robert,

It depends on what you're looking to do with the data once you've compiled it.  I'm thinking you'd be better served having this as a report to see who has what version at a glance than looking to make sub-collections to update one at a time.  If the report is what you're after than the easy way to set this up is to create a new report with columns for Computer Name, Application Name, and Application Version with a Filter to show All machines that have an application name equaling Google Chrome installed.

Once you save and run this report you'll have a report of all of your machines so let's take this a step further and right click on the column for Application Version and choose Group by this Column.

Which will then give you this:

From here you can make collections for each version or use this information at a glance to see what versions are installed on each machine.

I see that you have an Enterprise License for Inventory as well so don't forget that you have access to our Collection Library that we keep up to date and we already have a collection for Google Chrome that should come in pretty handy as well.

  • That's exactly what we needed.  I pulled the initial collection as a duplicate of the Collection Library, we just wanted to treat the users differently.  One patchlevel version of Chrome behind isn't a terrible deal, two major versions behind needs to be addressed promptly.

    Thanks for your assistance,

    Robert Peters.
