PDQ Inventory over the internet?

Is it feasible to run PDQ Inventory in a non-LAN scenario?  I love the product but we were acquired by a company that does not use VPN tunnels between their ~20 offices.  We are currently using ManageEngine Desktop Central 9, but I would drop it in a heartbeat for PDQ Inventory if I was able to configure them to operate over the internet.  I'd drop DC9 altogether if PDQ supported Mac's for Inventory and Deployment as well.

  • I have this same query. I heard some time back that you were developing a client to connect to a PDQ server over the internet (a VPN client in a way) but don't know if this was just rumours??

  • Any new information on this? We have a number of systems at our sites that are not routable from the server. They are on a guest network and have access to the internet.

  • I am now looking at an alternative product that offers similar functionality over the internet without the need for a VPN. It's a shame PDQ can't see the value in it!

  • Have you found one?

  • Yes, trialling goverlan now and it's going well.

However, PDQ is definitely better for the specific features of Deploy and Inventory as they have the package library and it feels more refined, likely due to the massive community in comparison and the fact it does these two things only, so it does them very well.

Goverlan can do a whole lot more, including remote control, system management, remote support etc so it's more general with deploy and inventory features. So while it does support deployment and inventory, I still prefer the way PDQ works for those specific tasks.

It's also similar in costs to the enterprise edition of both pdq deploy and inventory so can be pricey depending on your current pdq licensing.
