Dynamic Collection Update Lag

I want to understand what makes dynamic collections update.  When I look at them when I come in and I look at the number in the (#) it's one number.  When I click on the collection it updates and the number changes.  This happens for all of them. What setting determine how often that updates on its own.  I feel like I have to click on every one every morning to get an accurate reading.
