Keeping R up to date on a group of computers

At our University/Graduate school, we have lots of faculty, phd, postdocs, researchers, and they get a desktop at some point and base levels of software, then some of that software doesn't get updated until they ask.

What I'd like to do, is have a group of machines, where we use pdq to keep specific applications always up to date, like the most current copies of R and R Studio.
Possibly doing this on a quarterly basis. we're already doing apps like chrome, firefox, adobe with ninite pro, ** I know we could do that with pdq also, but we had ninite before and it works well.

We would have a concept of a collection of machines that "signed up" for this service, then have a set of nested packages that would uninstall older versions and install new versions, and we'd run that manually.

kind of like a simple BIGFIX

Are there any different ways of doing this that you can think of?

Thanks, Steve Miley

  • Hi Joe,

If i am understanding correctly Custom Fields may be helpful in your situation, however, this is probably not the best solution if you have over 100+ computers. We use a standard name scheme like EXT#### so all our employee workstations can be target easier for our collections.

Adust the individual value on the machines

Create a collection for the Custom Field
