Microsoft Edge package installation failures

I'm getting "MSI (s) (E0:30) [14:41:19:166]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Microsoft Edge. Product Version: 79.0.309.71. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Installation success or error status: 1603." when trying to install this package.  Have tried multiple Win 10 build 1909 PCs.

Is this package affected by the Microsoft Edge Blocker toolkit?  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-blocker-toolkit We do have that GPO in place.

  • I don't think it should, but I don't know if we've tested that.

Another thing that can cause 1603 errors is if the targets are behind on Windows Updates: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployEdge/microsoft-edge-sysupdate-windows-updates

  • Hi,

I have the exact same issue.

When I look into the log files, I find this :

MSI (s) (E0:D4) [09:45:44:216]: Product: Microsoft Edge -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action DoInstall, location: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI58FF.tmp, command: /silent /install "appguid={56EB18F8-B008-4CBD-B6D2-8C97FE7E9062}&appname=Microsoft Edge&needsAdmin=True&usagestats=0&ap=stable-arch_x64" /installsource enterprisemsi /appargs "appguid={56EB18F8-B008-4CBD-B6D2-8C97FE7E9062}&installerdata=%7B%22distribution%22%3A%7B%22msi%22%3Atrue%2C%22system_level%22%3Atrue%2C%22verbose_logging%22%3Atrue%2C%22msi_product_id%22%3A%224D4DBD27-95C0-31BB-BECA-A1A5AB6D5E87%22%2C%22allow_downgrade%22%3Afalse%7D%7D"

Did you manage to find a solution ?

  • I was able to directly attribute it to the blocker toolkit GPO that I linked in my original post.  Changing the GPO setting to "not configured" allows installation of Edge Chromium.

    /Computer Configuration
      /Administrative Templates
        /Classic Administrative Templates
          /Windows Components
            /Windows Update
              /Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) Blockers

  • So... I was able to install Microsoft Edge 80.0.361.57 via the PDQ package but now I've run into a different issue.  I can't uninstall or update it.  It doesn't even show up on the list of installed programs under Control Panel > Programs and Features.  Which in turn means it doesn't appear on the PDQ list of applications.  But it's on my start menu and I'm able to use the browser.

When trying to update Edge via the PDQ package, it's failing at step 2 (error 1603) again.

This appears to be related again to our Microsoft Edge (Chromium) GPO, as when I disabled the GPO, the install was successful.  Narrowing it down to specific settings, it doesn't appear to be the Microsoft Edge (Chromium-Based) Blockers setting as I suggested above.  Instead it appears to be this setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge Update > Applications > Microsoft Edge > Allow Installation

Setting this to "Enabled" allows the package to install properly.  My understanding from the definition was that this only blocked installations via the automatic update process, but that doesn't appear to be the case.  It blocks all installations of Microsoft Edge Chromium on the stable update channel.
