Rename a non-AD machine?

Hello all. I've been using PDQ Inventory for a few weeks now, and really find it very useful for an inventory tool.

I add machines by computer name, and that works well. I have 5 custom fields set up, including User, Age(purchase date), AssetTag, comments, dept.

So here is my issue. When I have a 'spare' machine, and am getting ready to issue to a user, I change the name of the computer. I can add the new computer name to the inventory, and it scans fine, but it would be better if I could change the name of the existing computer instead of add name, delete old machine. It loses scan history, and also doesn't transfer the data from those 5 custom fields.

Suggestions on how to fix, or what I might be missing?

  • Open the computer in Inventory, open the Computer menu, then click on "Update Name in Inventory".

  • Thanks for the reminder. I found that option two weeks ago when the issue first came up. At the time, I was using the free PDQ Inventory/Deploy, so just figured that was one of the paid features. And couldn't find it when I was looking today.

When you mentioned it, I tried again with some refreshed hope, and that option is grayed out and not available. Along with a few other options.

    Any suggestion?

  • Looks like that's a bug. You have to click inside the window first (it should work if the Print Preview button is clickable).

  • Got it. That worked, at least as far as enabling the option. I just need to find an excuse to rename another computer now.

    Thanks bunches!
