How does Inventory Scan actually work?

How exactly does the Inventory Scan work? When it knows a PC is online, what services and protocols is it using to collect the standard data, etc. I can't seem to find this in any of the documentation or community posts.

Yes, we do require a few ports/services to be available on the target machines: https://help.pdq.com/hc/en-us/articles/220533627-Windows-Firewall-Ports-and-Exceptions
