How are machines uniquely identified?

What is the method used to uniquely identify a machine? I suspect its not the hardware ID which would be ideal. I am asking because I just found out someone on the help desk had the "smart idea" to image SSD's on a local machine and send them out to people to install as an upgrade in their systems. Problem I am going to have is we have custom info stored on machines and I am guessing that's going to get lost. Of course they ran this idea past no one..

  • Craig,

I believe that machines are uniquely identified by computer name. I agree that is not ideal and some kind of inherent hardware ID or PDQ-generated UUID would be better.

  • Can't be. It's smart enough that it is renaming PC's we rename in AD.

I'm submitting a support ticket to see if I can get some clarification.
